Solent Airport

At the airfield we will be building a converter station. We have established our new site access which has an entrance leading onto Broom Way.

In the coming month, we will start receiving deliveries of steel columns through this entrance. These columns will form the main structure of the converter buildings. We anticipate between five and six wagon deliveries a week all deliveries will follow the agreed delivery route as detailed on the map.

To avoid disruption as far as possible, our deliveries will be outside the hours of:

Monday to Friday: 08:00 - 08:45.
Monday to Friday: 15:00 -16:00.

Monks Hill Beach

At the beach both the HVDC and HVAC cables will come onshore. To do this we will create a compound at the car park to ensure our work in is contained within one area. The western part of the car park as well as the beach huts and Shack will be preserved throughout the construction period.

This work is due to be carried out in 2019.

HVAC Cable

Along the route between Daedalus and Chilling we will be laying the HVAC cable under the sea. In preparation for this work we are currently carrying out a number of investigations to ready the route for the cable which will be laid in 2019.

Connection point

At Chilling, National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) operate a facility which is currently used to connect the electricity cables that run under Southampton Water to a substation at Lovedean. NGET are now building a substation at Chilling, so that power from IFA2 can be fed into the national grid.

Chilling Landfall

IFA2 will make land at Chilling. To lay the cables at Chilling, we are using a technique known as Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), which involves drilling underground and installing a series of ducts.

IFA2 will then makes its way across the Channel to the landfall at Merville-Franceville-Plage before connecting with the Tourbe Interconnector in Normandie.

HVDC Cable

The HVDC cables link the electricity transmission systems of Great Britain and France are an essential part of IFA2. We’ll carry out the work to lay these cables in 2019.

Open Space

The new public open space will be a resource for the whole community, providing an attractive and accessible area of natural green space. The open space will offer a range of different experiences for the people who use it, as well as providing a range of wildlife habitats. The open space will also offer new ways of getting around the area. The inclusion of a new foot and cycle path running east-west through the open space would offer an off-road alternative for people travelling between Stubbington, the Alver Valley, Lee-on-the-Solent and Gosport.
